Don’t you love popcorn! Most of us love this easy snack, but we don’t love how it gets stuck in our teeth. Ever tried to maneuver a kernel out of your teeth during a movie date? It can be painful – not to mention awkward. Here are some tips to move the food out of the way without damaging your teeth and cutting into your gums.

Brush your teeth: Brushing regularly is a good start to dental health. Consider using a small brush that you can maneuver between your teeth to get food particles out. Avoid sharp objects. If you’re thinking of sticking a knife or pen between your teeth – don’t do it.

Carry floss: Flossing is one of the best ways to dislodge food stuck in your teeth. It’s not expensive and you can carry it with you. If regular flossing doesn’t dislodge the food between your teeth, tie a small knot in the floss and gently pull it between your teeth. Go here to learn the best flossing techniques. In addition to floss, you may want to use a dental pick. Rinsing with warm water can also help.

See your dentist: If all else fails, go see your dentist, particularly if you’ve tried one of these techniques without success. It’s also helpful to see your dentist if you often have trouble removing food from between your teeth. Your teeth may have shifted or you may have cavities that need to be filled.

Remember to brush and floss daily. Food particles that get stuck between teeth can feed the bacteria in the mouth, leading to tooth decay and cavities. And it’s not an attractive look – particularly if you’re on a date!
